How do you find a book on the shelves?
The numbers on the spines of books are known as "call numbers." The combinations of numbers and letters may seem random, but they follow a system called the Library Congress Classification System (you may be more familiar with the Dewey Decimal System from public and school libraries).
- For guidance on how to read and interpret call numbers, go to http://www.usg.edu/galileo/skills/unit03/libraries03_04.phtml.
- To determine which floor a book is on, consult a library map at the Research/IT or Circulation desks, near stairwells or here: http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/library/about/maps/.
